SWF Patchwork Pals - Know Your Sewing Machine - Part 2

Today, Saturday 15 June, saw Pauline Nash return for Part 2 of the “Know Your Sewing Machine” Workshops. 

We covered all the stretch stitches, trying them out on a jersey fabric - turning a hem on a t-shirt with a twin needle is easy when you know how!  We then tried embroidery stitches using a hoop, a drawing pin and white tack to sew circles of butterflies.

After lunch, we were back to work cutting out a small bodice and joining it together with a rolled flat seam at both the shoulder and side seam.  We then added a binding to the armhole using a contrast fabric.  All useful knowledge for making summer dresses - if the sun ever comes out.

We also made cord and used 2 methods of sewing bias binding.

We will be putting our new skills to the test later in the year making a Gilet.  If you would like to come along, let us know .

 Only a few of us today - we missed those who couldn’t make it.  It was nice to catch up and see what everyone had been working on. The Allotment group quilt is now complete.  There was much discussion about the best way to quilt it to really bring the produce to life.  Watch this space. Sandy and Val have been working on this William Morris quilt.  Val had sewn all the pieces together - and Sandy hand quilted it.  Yes - HAND QUILTED!!   The back is a work of art as much as the front. Sharon had made this beautiful purse/bag - which had lovely Japanese inspired fabric for the lining. She was also working on a couple of summer skirts.  Hopefully she’ll be modelling one at the next meet up. Sandy had also been working on her basket quilt.  But she’d got bored of baskets and had branched out into flowers and hearts.  It’s going to look amazing when it’s all put together. Patchwork Pals Meeting 1st August 2025

  1st of August.  How did that happen?  A really busy group met on Friday - there was lots to share. Joy- what a beautiful cardigan.  Love the bobbles!  Sharon was enhancing a dress she already has:  Marillyn had lots to share-  Not only these beautiful cross-body bags: She was also able to share this beautiful baby record book: Here are the layers: Jenny was working on this very jolly Father Christmas  Juliet was working on this stunner- wish it was in my size!  Germaine was working on something mysterious with a Pomegranate...more to be revealed next month and the result in January at Barleylands.

SWF Patchwork Pals - Saturday 8 November 2025

We had a lot of completed “show and tell” items this month.  Lots were for the “I Spy Trail” that takes place on Sat 22 November around SWF when the Xmas lights are turned on.  The I Spy Trail items will be going into different shops and a leaflet is being made up for those on the hunt! Sue Edwards has finally managed to frame all her Spring, Summer, Autum and Winter embroideries.  They look absolutely fabulous and so realistic, a true work of Art!  Julie finished her workshop cushion, 90 degree triangles.  It looks brilliant and so cheerful!  Julie has decorated a pair of wellies with patchwork ready for part of the I Spy trail!  They look such fun. Pat Robson did these boots!  Took a lot longer than expected, but again, great fun (although Pat did get very sticky fingers!)
